It’s crazy but you don’t necessarily need to invest in a full book to create beautiful macramé plant hangers.
I only learned one knot and did all my plant hangers with this knot, plus some freestyle knots.
So if you want to try and explore before you commit to a book, or you’re not patient enough for your book to arrive, here are some great videos to start with macrame now:
Master the basics of macramé knots
YouTube video by Rachel Colton
This video teaches you the 2 basic knots you need to know as a complete beginner: Square knot and twist knot.
You’ll learn that it really only is one knot – either knotted alternately left and right or always the same side first. You’re also learning how to start and finish a plant hanger design, and how to fit a pot.
Rachel talks you trough the process – an appreciated help compared to many other DIY tutorials which just have written instructions.
This is the tutorial I followed to create all my plant hangers!
5 plant hanger step-by-step instructions
YouTube video by TEXSENSE
Once you master the basic knots, this video offers you great ideas for plant hangers designs. It has step-by-step instructions to all designs.
It’s quite easy to follow once you master the different knot styles, however since it’s quite fast and doesn’t really explain how to precisely do each knot design, you might need to look up how to do each knot exactly on the side.
My Experience with Making Macrame Plant Hangers
My journey with macrame plant hangers started out of necessity. I saw them all around social media and wanted to get some for myself, to add some texture to my living room. But, as it happens a lot, I didn’t find any hangers that I loved. There was always something wrong with the ones in home décor stores: Either length, the design, the pot wasn’t cute, or it was overpriced.
So I decided to make my own ones. After all, I could control all these factors, customizing a few hangers to my favourite pots, creating a beautiful arrangement in an empty corner of my apartment.
To learn making macrame hangers, I went on YouTube and learned the basic knots, square knots (which can be made flat or twisting). I also learned how to tie them all together at the beginning, and went from there to create my first plant hangers.
They are pretty free-style, some even contain simple knots that are not even a proper macrame technique.
I love the simplicity and flexibility you have creating your plant hangers this way. The only thing I don’t take lightly is checking if the pot really sits stable inside the hanger. To do so, it’s easiest to use a clean, empty pot.
From time to time, I borrow a macrame book from my local library, to get some fresh ideas on patterns and designs.
I love how macramé designs give a natural and playful vibe to modern homes. The balance between clean lines and organic elements is so refreshing and adds personality to any room!
